Michael S. Nolan is an award-winning photographer who specializes
in intimate portraits of marine animals. He has traveled the oceans of
the world in search of what he believes are the world's most
magnificent beings. Since 1990 all of his underwater images have been
created while free-diving, without the aid of bulky Scuba equipment.
As a result, he believes his encounters with these magnificent ocean
creatures are much more personal and intimate. His photography has
appeared in hundreds of magazines, calendars, and books in over 45
countries worldwide. He insists on only photographing wild animals
in their natural habitat, believing that there is no place in wildlife
photography for captive or trained animals. The images you see
are the animals as they truly are, whether captured on film or on a
compact flash card, in all their wild and natural beauty.

HUMPBACK WHALES
Breach! Yet another amazing image capturing the beauty and strength of
Humpback Whales! This calf is only about five months old, but in that time
he has more than doubled his birth weight by nursing on mom's rich milk.
He has also made the swim from his place of birth in Hawaii to Southeast
Alaska, where this picture was taken. Can you imagine making a 3,000 mile
swim only a few weeks after being born? Caramba!

BLUE SHARKS
These Blue Sharks are gathering in huge numbers in response to frozen bait
we have put into the water. The sharks are attracted to the “chum line” and
come from many miles away to investigate. As many as 50 of these streamlined
and graceful predators surrounded me as I took these images off San Clemente
Island in southern California.

COMMON DOLPHINS
These long-beaked Common Dolphins are traveling fast just as the sun is
setting over the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. There were literally hundreds of
these small dolphins churning up the calm waters near Isla San Lorenzo in
the Gulf of California. While traveling in a pod leaping is actually the
most efficient way to maintain these high speeds! Caramba!

GREEN SEA TURTLE
In the crystal clear waters off Maui, Hawaii this beautiful Green Sea
Turtle paused to have her picture taken just before rising to the surface to
take a breath of air. Her shell is magnificent and very colorful where tiny
fish called cleaner wrasse have eaten the algae forming on her carapace and
body. To complete the photo her shell is reflected on the surface water
above her! Amazing!

ATLANTIC SPOTTED DOLPHINS
These Atlantic Spotted Dolphins all seem to be smiling as they swim over
the shallow banks of their home waters off Grand Bahama Island. These
wonderful animals often swim together in tight dolphin formations, often
approaching swimmers for a closer view. Just who is checking out whom?
